What are cookies?

Cookies are small text files that a website places on your computer (or mobile device) when you first visit the site. They can help the website recognize your device the next time you visit, can help you remember your username or preferences, and recommend content that works best for you based on your previous behavior on the site. The term ‘cookies’ applies to all files that collect information in this manner.

Some cookies contain personal information. For example, if you click on “remind me” when downloading, this file will remember your username. But most cookies do not collect information by which you can be identified; instead they will collect more general information about where you came from (location, geographic area).

What cookies does our site use?

In general terms, our cookies perform four different functions:

  • Basic cookies: some cookies are important for the website to work. For example, some cookies allow you to identify subscribers and ensure that they only visit pages they have subscribed to, save items in their shopping cart, and so on.
  • Statistics cookies: we use cookies to collect statistics, to analyze how our visitors use our site and to monitor its performance. This enables us to provide a high quality service by offering quick access to the most popular pages.
  • Functionality cookies: we use these cookies to allow us to remember your preferences. For example, functionality cookies help you save time when filling out various forms to save the settings you specify as your preferred settings.
  • Other cookies: we also use cookies to monitor website traffic, improve website functionality, and detect the use of bots (robots).

How long do cookies stay on my device?

Some cookies operate from the time you login to the site until the end of that particular browsing session. When you close the browser, these files become unnecessary and are automatically deleted. These cookies are called ‘session cookies’.

Some cookies also remain on your device between browsing sessions. They are not deleted when you close your browser. These cookies are called ‘persistent cookies’. The retention period of persistent cookies on your device varies for different cookies. We and other companies use persistent cookies for a number of purposes: for example, to better understand how often you visit or return to our sites, to measure usage patterns over time, and to measure the effectiveness of advertising.
